What ꏴ means
It stands for one syllable in Liangshan Yi. Final x marks the secondary high tone. As of 2026, it is font-drawn text, not emoji artwork.
How did Yi writing develop?
Local Yi traditions led to a Liangshan standard.
One tradition credits Aki with devising Yi writing during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the oldest surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485.
Until modern times, village priests used local forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Traditional Yi writing was also called Cuan or Wei; its ideographs appear independent of Han forms. The Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 for official, news, literary, ritual, and epic texts.

1Why does ꏴ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
