What ꏵ means

It is a Nuosu Yi syllable meaning marrow.

In the Liangshan standard, its Latin-letter spelling is jur; marrow is the soft tissue inside a bone.

Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, used signs for words or ideas. A widely told origin tradition credits Aki with creating the script during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the earliest surviving Yi inscription is on a Guizhou bronze bell dated 1485.

Is ꏵ used in every Yi language?

No. ꏵ belongs to the Liangshan Yi standard.

This syllabary—a writing system with one sign per spoken syllable—writes the Liangshan dialect, whose speakers are called Nuosu. Other Yi writing traditions vary in their signs, readings, and direction, so this standard is not for every Yi language.

Before standardization, village priests passed traditional Yi writing down through generations for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Yi began in 1956; the traditional-script standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, then used for literacy texts, newspapers, literature, and public documents. If your font lacks Yi glyphs, it may show a square in place of ꏵ; that placeholder does not change the character.

How do I type ꏵ?

Use a Yi input method; Windows offers one for this script.

The Windows Yi Input Method Editor (IME), a tool that lets a regular keyboard enter Yi, takes phonetic input typed on ordinary keys and shows a candidate list. Enter the standard Latin spelling jur, then select the matching character. Microsoft documented this workflow as of 2024; it does not require changing the Windows display language.

This character belongs to Liangshan Yi writing; outside that language context, the glyph needs explanation.

1

Why does ꏵ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
