What ꇒ means
ꇒ represents one syllable in the modern Liangshan Yi script. The standardized Latin spelling “lurx” labels its sound and tone: final x marks the secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern, rather than an extra consonant. That spelling is a pronunciation guide, not an English gloss for the character.
Why was Yi writing used?
Traditional Yi writing served bimo, Yi religious specialists. They used regional Yi forms in ceremonies; bimo’s Yi ritual manuscripts carried scripture, genealogies, medicine, divination, spells, funeral and exorcism texts, and origin stories to be recited or performed.
Traditional Yi forms varied by region and writer. A bimo could struggle to read another bimo’s manuscript, so the older writing traditions did not function as one uniform everyday standard.
The script’s beginnings remain uncertain. The oldest reliably dated Yi-script inscription usually cited is on the Chenghua Bell, an inscribed bell cast in the 15th century and often dated around 1485. The Liangshan standard was organized in the 1970s and ratified in 1980 for school literacy and publishing; it represents the Nuosu variety, not every Yi language.
Is ꇒ a Chinese character?
No. ꇒ belongs to a separate Yi writing tradition. Traditional Yi writing included ideographic signs, which could represent words or ideas; the modern Liangshan standard assigns one sign to each spoken syllable and tone. A similar-looking Han character is not interchangeable with this Yi sign, which follows Yi rather than Mandarin reading.
Language-specific and specialist: expect it in Yi text, script study, or Unicode tooling.
Someone who does not read Yi may not reliably decode this syllable from the glyph alone.
