yi syllable lux

Yi syllable lux

464/1165

ꇏ is a Yi character in the standardized writing system for Nuosu, a Yi language; it represents the syllable transcribed as “lux.” By itself, it identifies one syllable, while the surrounding Yi text gives context for a message. The Liangshan standard differs from older regional Yi writing traditions.

Text symbol

What ꇏ means

It represents the Nuosu syllable transcribed as “lux.” In the standard Liangshan Latin transcription, the letters identify the syllable and its tone; “lux” is not an English translation.

If someone sends ꇏ by itself, you can identify one syllable, but may not have enough context to interpret the intended message. The surrounding Yi word or sentence helps resolve it.

How did the Yi script develop?

It developed through regional traditions over time. Yi inscriptions survive on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone. The earliest securely dated surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; other proposed early examples have uncertain dates or readings.

Traditional Yi writing carried religious, magical, medical, and genealogical works. Bimo—Yi ritual specialists—copied and transmitted texts through their lineages; the broader literature also included scripture, legends, history, medicine, and astrology.

The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It grew from traditional Yi writing, called Cuan or Wei in some accounts, but was standardized for the Liangshan dialect rather than every Yi language. Older regional systems may differ in forms and readings.

How do I type ꇏ?

Use an input method or character table that supports Nuosu Yi. Enter the standard Latin transcription lux and select ꇏ; typing the letters alone leaves them as Latin text.

In Liangshan romanization, final x marks the secondary-high tone, a pitch category; t marks high level, p low falling, and no final tone letter marks midlevel. This tone spelling makes the full transcription useful for lookup.

Inside Yi text, ꇏ functions as a written syllable; by itself, it may be hard to interpret.

Without surrounding Yi text, do not infer the intended message from one syllable.

Questions people ask

2

Is ꇏ a Chinese character?

No. It is written in the Yi syllabic script, a separate writing system from Han Chinese characters.

Why does ꇏ show as a box?

The active font may lack Yi coverage. A font with Yi glyphs can display the character; the missing glyph does not change the text.
