What ꃊ means
It writes a spoken syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi.
In Liangshan Yi’s Latin-letter spelling, unmarked my has midlevel tone; x in myx marks secondary-high tone, not an added consonant.
How did this form become standard?
It standardizes older regional Yi writing.
Traditional Yi writing varied by region; bimo priests passed down religious, medical, and magical texts. Older signs could carry meanings; the Liangshan standard records syllables. Its origin remains debated; the oldest reliably dated surviving inscriptions are from the 15th century.
A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Yi appeared in 1956; this script was standardized in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It is specific to Liangshan Yi, not all Yi dialects.
