yi syllable nbyt

Yi Syllable Nbyt

140/1165

ꂋ is a written syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. Its Latin-letter label, nbyt, identifies the reading; the final t marks a high-level tone, not an English word or message. Traditional Yi writing varied by locality before the modern standard.

Text symbol

What ꂋ means

It represents one spoken syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script.

“Nbyt” is the Latin-letter spelling used to label the syllable; its final t marks a high-level tone. The glyph gives a spoken unit, not an English gloss. The Yi word or sentence around it is needed to choose a translation.

How did the Yi script develop?

It grew through local traditions and later gained a Liangshan standard.

A bronze bell dated 1485 is identified as the earliest surviving example in the Unicode overview. Surviving paper texts are placed around 1500.

Traditional Yi writing varied by locality. Bimo, ritual specialists, kept texts for religious practice, magic, medicine, and family genealogies; older graphs could stand for ideas or words. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy in one Yi dialect. It represents spoken syllables. A separate set of Yi radicals serves as dictionary lookup keys, not as alternate meanings of ꂋ.

Why does ꂋ look wrong, and how do I type it?

Yi fonts shape its display; Yi input methods enter it.

A font with Yi coverage draws the character; without one, a box or fallback glyph may appear. That changes the display, not the encoded character. The modern standard is written left to right, while older Yi traditions used several directions. For repeated Yi text, use a Liangshan Yi keyboard or input method; plain Latin nbyt remains letters unless the method converts it.

This is written Liangshan Yi; its reading belongs to the language, not an English gloss.

Alone, ꂋ identifies a syllable, not a reliable English translation.

Why does ꂋ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is ꂋ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
