What ꂌ means
It is one Nuosu syllable, not a standalone translation. In the standardized Liangshan Yi system, nbyx is the Latin-letter transcription for ꂌ. One Yi syllable can represent different words in different contexts, so the surrounding text is needed to tell which word this one carries.
The final x in nbyx marks the secondary-high tone in the transcription. It is a reading cue, not an extra syllable or word.
How did Yi writing develop?
Its early record includes debated claims and dated surviving examples. Some scholars attribute inscriptions on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone to the Western Han period, but that attribution is debated. The earliest surviving example commonly cited is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; paper manuscripts appear around 1500.
Before modern standardization, Yi writing served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts passed down by bimo, Yi ritual specialists. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It is one regional standard: Yi communities have other writing traditions, with different repertoires, shapes, writing directions, and degrees of mutual intelligibility.
Is ꂌ a Chinese character?
No. It is a syllable in a Yi writing system. Traditional Yi writing developed in contact with Chinese writing, but the older Yi signs are not thought to derive from Han characters. The modern Liangshan standard comes from Classical Yi, an older form of Yi writing.
Regional Yi traditions differ in their written signs, shapes, and writing directions, and readers do not necessarily understand every tradition equally. ꂌ belongs to the standardized Liangshan Nuosu system, not to a universal character set shared by every Yi community.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꂌ show as a box?
A box usually means the active font lacks Yi glyph coverage. ꂌ is text drawn by a font, so its display depends on installed font support; use a font with Yi coverage to inspect its shape.
