yi syllable nda

Yi Syllable Nda

346/1165

ꅙ is the Yi syllable sign romanized as “nda” in the standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) script. It is a writing character, not an emoji, and a single syllable usually cannot be translated into English without the surrounding word. Traditional Yi writing also served bimo specialists who kept ritual, medical, and family-history texts.

Text symbol

What ꅙ means

It writes one Yi syllable, romanized as “nda.” In standardized Liangshan Yi, each sign represents an allowable syllable. The surrounding Yi word or sentence supplies its meaning; this character alone is not a complete English word.

This is the Liangshan standard, not a universal spelling system for every regional Yi tradition. Other regional traditions may use different forms.

What does ꅙ mean when someone sends it?

Read it as a Yi syllable without its surrounding text. By itself, ꅙ does not identify the sender’s full word or give a stable English translation. Ask for the Yi word or sentence if the message needs decoding.

How did the Liangshan Yi script become standardized?

The standard supported teaching and publication. Traditional Yi writing had regional forms and specialist uses: bimo are Yi ritual specialists who transmitted texts for religious, medical, and genealogical work. The modern standard drew on older northern Liangshan forms and supported textbooks, newspapers, official documents, and literature.

The earliest surviving Yi inscription is a bronze-bell text dated 1485. Older proposed stone and bronze finds exist, but the script’s origin remains debated. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980.

The Liangshan branch continues older Yi forms. Traditional Yi writing is independent of Chinese characters and is not a branch of neighboring Tibetan, Burmese, or Tai scripts.

Neutral in Yi writing; opaque when sent alone to someone who cannot read the script.

Do not infer a full English message from one syllable.

Why does ꅙ show as a box?

It can. As of 2026, that usually means the selected font lacks this glyph; switch the document or device to a Yi-capable font. The box is a rendering fallback, not a second meaning.
