What ꅡ means
It represents a syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi writing. The standard Latin-letter spelling is ndep; its final p marks a low falling tone, not an extra p sound. A Liangshan Yi dictionary records the pronunciation as [ndɯ²¹] in phonetic notation but gives no English gloss, so the surrounding Yi text is needed to translate it.
Yi ritual manuscripts helped bimo, Yi ritual specialists, preserve and perform ceremonial knowledge, including funeral rites, divination, and observances for ancestors. Regional traditions differed in glyph shapes, sounds, punctuation, reading direction, and mutual readability. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980; it also serves education, official documents, newspapers, and literature.
The script’s origin remains debated. Cuan wen is a historical name for forms treated as possible antecedents of Yi writing. Surviving Yi monuments with secure dates begin in the 15th century; a Dafang bronze bell is dated 1485. Earlier Guizhou objects have been proposed as evidence, while many manuscripts are undated. Some character references use Han-style radicals—the components used to organize Chinese characters—as a lookup aid for Yi forms; that filing method does not make ꅡ a Han character.
This is a language-specific text character; the surrounding Yi syllables determine its reading in a word.
Alone, ꅡ is a syllable sample; surrounding Yi text is needed for translation.
