What ꅖ means
It represents one spoken Yi syllable.
The Chenghua Bell (1485) bears the earliest reliably dated surviving Yi inscription. Older Yi writing had regional forms. In traditional Yi practice, bimo (Yi religious specialists) passed it down through religious, magical, healing, and family-line texts. Standardization later formed a syllabary for Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu: each sign stands for a syllable.
Other Yi traditions may use different written forms or give signs different sound values, so this standardized character does not represent every Yi variety. Yi script is distinct from the Han characters used to write Chinese.
Alone, ꅖ reads as part of Yi writing, not as a general chat reaction.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꅖ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
