yi syllable nex

Yi Syllable Nex

399/1165

ꆎ is the Nuosu syllable sign spelled nex in Yi Pinyin: it represents one spoken syllable, not a whole word. The surrounding Yi words supply the meaning, and a neighboring syllable can change its tone in connected speech. The modern Liangshan standard grew from older local Yi writing traditions.

What ꆎ means

It represents one spoken Nuosu syllable, not a whole word.

Nuosu is the Yi language variety for which the Liangshan standard was made. Unicode’s Yi chart gives this syllable the pronunciation [nɯ³⁴]: an n followed by a vowel like “oo” made without rounding the lips, with the voice rising from mid to high. In Yi Pinyin, nex is its spelling; the final x marks tone, not an x sound. One connected-speech lesson shows the Nuosu pronoun for “you” taking this rising tone before ꑌ, written nyi in Yi Pinyin. This tone shift between neighboring syllables is called tone sandhi.

How did the Yi script develop?

It developed through local traditions before a modern standard.

Some scholarship places Yi inscriptions on pottery, stone, and bronze more than a millennium ago; Unicode uses a surviving bronze bell dated 1485 as its conservative monumental anchor. Bimo are Yi ritual specialists who copied local forms into manuscripts for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.

The standardized Liangshan form was devised in the 1970s and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It drew on older Northern Yi forms and broadened writing into official documents, newspapers, literature, and digital use. Other regional Yi traditions are historically related, but the Liangshan standard is not a substitute for all of them.

How do I type ꆎ?

Use Yi Pinyin with a Yi input method.

A Yi/Nuosu input method uses Yi Pinyin, a Latin-based spelling system, to turn an entry into a Yi character. Input and display are separate: the device also needs a font with Yi coverage.
