Yi Syllable Nguot

613/1165

ꉤ is one Liangshan Yi syllable, not Chinese or emoji.

Text symbol

What ꉤ means

It writes the syllable “nguot.” In “nguot,” final t marks a steady high pitch.

Where did Yi writing come from?

Stories credit Aki, a traditional figure; dated evidence comes later. The earliest securely dated inscription is on a bilingual Yi-Chinese bronze bell from Guizhou, in 1485.

How did its role change?

Its role shifted from local ritual to public literacy. Bimo (Yi priests) kept varied local forms for ritual, medicine, fortune-telling, and family histories. The Liangshan standard adapted older Yi writing in 1974 and became official in 1980 to promote literacy; other Yi varieties have distinct traditions.
