yi syllable nji

Yi syllable nji

Nuosu uses ꐳ for “quick” or “fast” as a word. It also writes one spoken syllable, so context guides its English rendering inside a longer phrase. The standardized Liangshan Yi form grew from older regional writing and was made for one language variety, not every Yi language.

What ꐳ means

It writes the syllable nji in Nuosu, with a mid-level tone.

Nuosu is the Liangshan Yi language. Its standard Latin-letter spelling nji is roughly “n-jee,” with a nasal start. As a word, ꐳ means “quick” or “fast”; inside a longer phrase, context guides the English translation.

Tone means pitch pattern: a bare syllable with no ending letter has a steady mid-level pitch. In Liangshan Yi romanization, final t, x, and p mark other tones: high-level, secondary-high, and low-falling.

When was the Liangshan Yi syllabary standardized?

It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980.

The standard was shaped from traditional Yi writing to support literacy in the Liangshan region, where Nuosu is spoken; it was not intended to standardize every Yi language. Older Yi texts were copied and taught by bimo, ritual specialists, and served religious, medical, genealogical, and magical traditions. Historical sources also call traditional Yi writing Cuan or Wei.

Some scholars identify inscriptions on bronze, pottery, and stone in Guizhou as Yi writing; those attributed to the Western Han period are debated. A surviving bronze bell dated 1485 and paper or sheepskin texts from around 1500 show the script in use. One tradition credits A Ke with creating Yi writing during the Tang dynasty, but surviving evidence does not establish that origin date.

Is ꐳ a Chinese character?

No; ꐳ writes a Liangshan Yi syllable, not Chinese speech.

Traditional Yi writing is a distinct script tradition; its older signs appear not to derive from Han characters (Chinese characters). The modern Liangshan standard shares punctuation conventions with modern Chinese, but that does not change the language or reading of ꐳ.
