What ꐴ means
It writes a syllable; in Nuosu, njip can mean “root.” A Nuosu grammar records ꐴ in a phrase meaning “the root of that tree”; the isolated character needs context.
Paper and sheepskin Yi texts survive from around 1500; stone or bronze origin claims remain debated. Bimo (Yi ritual specialists) used this writing for ritual, genealogy, medicine, and divination. Liangshan standardized a syllabary (signs for spoken syllables) from regional forms in 1974. Cuan and Wei are older Yi writing traditions with non-interchangeable forms.
