What ꐵ means
It writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. A syllabary gives each character one spoken syllable. In Liangshan Yi romanization, njiet is roughly “ndjeh”: an n leads into a voiced j-like sound, followed by an open e. The final t marks a high, steady tone, not a final consonant.
Yi writing has many local traditions, with different sign sets, shapes, and writing directions. Village religious specialists called bimo passed texts down through generations, including religious, magical, medical, and family-history works. The standardized syllabary grew from older Yi signs associated with words or ideas; those signs were not derived from Chinese characters, though the standard's punctuation follows Chinese practice. The earliest securely dated surviving Yi-script inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485.
The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy in that dialect. It is not a universal writing system for all Yi dialects. Local traditions differ, so this standardized glyph may not correspond to signs in another tradition.
This is language-specific writing; its reading is clear in standardized Liangshan Yi text, but not automatically outside that context.
If it arrives alone and you do not read Yi, ask what word or phrase it belongs to.

njip uses the “ee”-like i and final p for low-falling tone; njiet has open ie and high-level tone.Questions people ask
2Why does ꐵ show as a box?
A missing-glyph box usually means the active font lacks Yi characters. Use a font with Yi coverage, such as Noto Sans Yi or Nuosu SIL; the underlying character has not changed.
What does the final t in njiet mean?
It marks the high, level tone in Liangshan Yi romanization. The spelling ends in t, but that letter marks pitch rather than an extra final consonant.
