What ꐽ means
It writes one syllable in the Liangshan Nuosu Yi system.
Nuosu Yi is spoken in Liangshan, a region in southwest China. The spelling njo is this syllable's Latin-letter label in the standardized system, not an English translation. Its meaning comes from the surrounding Yi word or sentence, so ꐽ alone has no reliable one-word English translation.
Why was Yi writing standardized?
It created a shared writing system for Liangshan Yi literacy. The Yi script developed through regional traditions rather than a documented single invention. One of the earliest securely dated surviving Yi inscriptions is on a bronze bell from 1485. Earlier Han-era evidence on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone has been reported, but its interpretation is disputed.
Older Yi writing varied by region: glyph forms, character inventories, and writing direction could differ. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, kept and performed religious texts; those writings also carried medical, magical, historical, and genealogical knowledge.
The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and formally promulgated in 1980. It is a syllabary—a writing system in which each character represents a spoken syllable—for Nuosu Yi, not every Yi variety. ꐽ belongs to that standard, which grew from older regional Yi writing.
A language-specific writing character: use it in Nuosu Yi text or in a clear discussion of Yi writing.
