Yi syllable Chur

886/1165

ꍵ represents a Yi syllable, identified in Latin letters as “chur”; its meaning in a word depends on the surrounding Yi text. It belongs to the standardized Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) writing system. Yi writing developed in regional forms centuries before the modern standard.

What ꍵ means

It represents a Yi syllable; the word’s meaning comes from context.

The Latin spelling “chur” identifies this syllable in the Liangshan romanization; it is not an English translation. Introduced in 1956, that romanization uses final t, p, and x to mark tones. Because “chur” ends in none of them, its label marks the midlevel tone. The syllable contributes sound within Yi words.

Yi writing had regional forms. The oldest reliably dated examples are inscriptions on bells from China’s Chenghua era, during the Ming dynasty, in the 15th century; claims for older Yi writing on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone remain debated. Paper Yi texts appear from around 1500 onward. Bimo priests—religious specialists—copied traditional Yi texts for ritual, magic, medicine, and genealogy. Devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, the Liangshan standard selected traditional forms for one dialect to support literacy. Naxi and Shui scripts are separate neighboring traditions.

Someone sent me ꍵ—what does it mean?

Treat it as a written Yi syllable, not a mood signal.

In a Liangshan Yi sentence, ꍵ can contribute to a word, but by itself it does not reveal the intended word or the sender’s tone. If you do not read Yi, ask what word or phrase they meant. Its shape alone cannot tell you whether the sender is joking, affectionate, or annoyed.

A language-specific syllable; alone, it gives little clue to the writer’s mood.

Do not read it as a reaction; ask what Yi word or phrase it represents.
