yi syllable njur

Yi syllable njur

ꑃ is the written form of one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script, used for the Nuosu variety. It belongs in Nuosu-language writing; the meaning of a word comes from its sentence. The sound-based standard grew from older, regionally varied Yi traditions.

What ꑃ means

It represents one Liangshan Yi syllable; context gives it a word meaning.

The standard romanization writes the sound as njur, one label for the syllable rather than four separate letter names. With no final tone letter, it has a mid-level tone: keep the pitch roughly steady in the middle.

The standardized script writes the Nuosu variety of Yi, not every Yi language or older regional writing tradition.

Where did Liangshan Yi writing come from?

It grew from older regional traditions and was reshaped for Liangshan speech.

Older Yi writing, historically known as Cuan or Wei, was ideographic: signs represented words or ideas rather than spoken syllables. One traditional account credits a person named Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the earliest surviving example identified is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485.

Village priests called bimo passed down religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts in local forms whose signs and writing directions varied. To improve literacy and represent Liangshan pronunciation, a standardized syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. Each sign represents one permitted spoken syllable. It grew from Yi writing but serves Liangshan, not every Yi language variety.

What does it mean when someone sends ꑃ?

Read it as Liangshan Yi text, not as a mood cue.

A Nuosu Yi word or sentence supplies its meaning. Alone, the glyph does not reliably signal an emotion or joke; outside a Yi-language exchange, ask what text the sender meant.

Neutral in Liangshan Yi writing; outside it, it signals a language choice rather than a mood.

Outside a Yi-language exchange, don't treat it as a mood cue; it is a written syllable.

Is ꑃ an emoji?

No. It is a Liangshan Yi syllable displayed through a font, not a vendor-designed emoji image.

Will ꑃ look the same everywhere?

Not always. The result depends on Yi-font support: stroke details can vary between fonts, and a font without Yi coverage may show a fallback box or missing-glyph mark.
