What ꌈ means
It writes the Liangshan Nuosu syllable nzyr, glossed “hot.” Nuosu dictionaries also give “spicy” and “peppery.”
Traditional Yi writing varied by region; village priests used it for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. The earliest surviving dated inscription commonly cited is on a bronze bell from 1485. A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Nuosu was introduced to promote literacy in 1956. The Liangshan standard drew on older local Yi forms; devised in 1974 and issued in 1980, it is a syllabary—one sign per syllable—for that Yi variety.
Neutral in Liangshan Nuosu writing; opaque without the language.
The “hot” gloss is not a full translation of a Yi message.
