What does ꌄ mean in Nuosu?
It writes one Nuosu syllable; context tells you which word it spells. In the Liangshan Yi romanization, introduced in 1956, final x marks the secondary-high tone (a pitch pattern), not an extra consonant sound.
Traditional Yi writing varied by region; historical records used names such as Cuan and Wei for its forms. Bimo (Yi ritual specialists) hand-copied religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The age of the oldest evidence is disputed: some scholars identify pottery, stone, and bronze inscriptions over a millennium old as Yi writing, while securely dated surviving examples include a bronze bell from 1485. Paper texts survive from at least the late Ming.
ꌄ belongs to the standardized Liangshan Yi syllabary, used for Nuosu (the Liangshan variety of Yi). Built from older Yi writing, this standard aimed to support literacy and public writing; it was standardized in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It serves public documents, newspapers, and literature, not every Yi language. Without Yi font support, it may appear as a blank box.
