Yi syllable O

18/1165

To type ꀑ, use an input method for Yi (Nuosu): enter the syllable’s romanized form and choose the matching character from its candidates. In standardized Liangshan Yi, it represents a syllable written “o”; the surrounding Yi text supplies the word, so the character alone has no fixed meaning. This standard belongs to a much older, regionally varied writing tradition.

What does Yi Syllable O mean?

It marks one syllable; context supplies its word. In standardized Liangshan Yi, this syllable is written with the romanized spelling “o.” Read ꀑ with the surrounding Yi text; by itself, it does not identify a complete word or sentence.

How did Yi writing change?

Yi writing has regional manuscript traditions, and some scholars argue for inscriptions older than the surviving dated examples. The earliest widely cited surviving dated example is a bronze bell from 1485; paper and parchment texts survive from around 1500. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used traditional forms in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.

A standard for Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It assigns one written sign to each syllable and supported literacy teaching, textbooks, and publishing. This is a modern standard within a broader Yi writing tradition: regional forms differ, and readers familiar with one may need instruction to read another.
