yi syllable ot

Yi syllable ot

ꀏ is a syllable in Liangshan Yi, not an English word or a clear reaction on its own. The Yi Pinyin romanization writes it
ot
:
o
is the vowel and final
t
marks a high pitch. Its meaning depends on its place in Yi text; the modern standard grew from older regional writing.

What ꀏ means

It is one Liangshan Yi syllable, written ot in Yi Pinyin. In Yi Pinyin, the romanized writing system, o gives the vowel and final t marks a high tone, spoken at a high pitch. The label ot guides pronunciation and lookup; it is not an English word.

In running Yi text, ꀏ sits within words and sentences, so its meaning depends on context. Alone, it does not give someone who cannot read Yi a dependable reaction. The mark ꀕ replaces the second occurrence when a syllable is repeated.

Why was the Yi script made?

The Liangshan standard gave Liangshan Yi a shared writing system. Older Yi writing traditions varied by region. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, preserved and used texts for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical purposes.

The Chenghua Bell Inscriptions, from the 15th century, are among the earliest securely dated examples of Yi writing. Other early inscriptions are harder to date, and many surviving paper texts were copied by hand.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It adapted older Yi ideographs—signs that could represent words or ideas—into a phonetic syllabary for Liangshan Yi. The standard is used in education, newspapers, books, public signs, and religious and literary writing. It represents the Liangshan variety, not every variety of Yi.

How do I type Yi syllable ot?

Enter ot in a Yi input method and select the character. As of 2024-06-20, Microsoft documents phoneme entry and candidate selection for its Windows Yi IME.

Input and display are separate: a box usually means the current font lacks Yi coverage. The character may have been entered correctly even when the font cannot draw it.

Neutral in Yi text. Outside a Yi sentence, the glyph identifies the writing system but gives no dependable standalone message.

Without Yi-language context, a lone ꀏ may look like random text.
