What ꁁ means
It represents a syllable; context supplies its word. Yi Pinyin, the Latin-letter system for reading and entering Yi, writes it as “pa,” spoken on a steady mid-level pitch with no final tone letter.
Older Yi writing varied by region and served religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts; the earliest securely dated surviving evidence is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. The literacy-focused Liangshan standard grew from older Yi forms rather than Han characters, was devised in 1974 and made official in 1980, and serves Liangshan Yi rather than every Yi tradition.
Outside Yi text, a bare ꁁ leaves its intended word unclear.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꁁ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
