yi syllable pap

Yi Syllable Pap

67/1165

ꁂ is a written syllable in standard Liangshan Yi, romanized as “pap” in Yi Pinyin; its word meaning comes from context. It belongs to the Nuosu writing standard used in schools and public text, not every Yi language. It has roots in older local writing traditions, but this standard serves the Liangshan dialect.

What ꁂ means

A syllable in standard Liangshan Yi, romanized as pap.

On its own, ꁂ represents a spoken syllable, not a complete word; its meaning comes from the word around it. Yi Pinyin writes its reading as pap, and the final p marks a low-falling tone rather than an extra final consonant.

How old is Yi writing?

Unicode’s account names a bronze bell dated 1485 as the earliest surviving example of Yi writing; paper or parchment texts date to around 1500, while earlier inscriptions remain disputed.

Older local writing traditions included forms used by village priests for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. A standardized syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It serves the Liangshan dialect of Nuosu, not every Yi language, and appears in schools, newspapers, public signs, and subtitles.

Traditional Yi is a related older writing tradition. Radical-and-stroke indexes group characters by their parts and stroke count, helping readers look up an unfamiliar Yi glyph.

How do you identify or type ꁂ?

Yi Pinyin or a radical-and-stroke index can identify it.

The glyph’s shape does not reliably show its sound. Yi Pinyin writes Yi syllables in Latin letters; indexes also let readers search by a character’s parts and stroke count.

Use ꁂ as a Liangshan Yi-language character, not as a decorative stand-in for Chinese writing.

If your recipient does not read Yi, ꁂ will not explain itself; provide a translation.
