yi syllable pyrx

Yi Syllable Pyrx

85/1165

ꁔ is one written syllable in the Liangshan standard for Nuosu, a Yi language; by itself, it does not identify one complete word. The Yi Pinyin spelling pyrx ends in x, a mark for secondary-high tone rather than a consonant sound. The Liangshan standard was shaped from local writing traditions to support literacy and public use.

What ꁔ means

It is one written Yi syllable, not a complete translation. A single Yi syllable can stand for different words, so surrounding text is needed to know which word is meant.

The spelling pyrx belongs to Yi Pinyin, a Latin-letter way of writing Liangshan Nuosu syllables. Its final x marks secondary-high tone; it marks pitch, not a consonant.

Why was the Liangshan Yi script standardized?

To make Yi writing teachable for wider public use. Yi writing has several regional traditions; the Liangshan standard is specifically for Nuosu. In older practice, bimo—ritual specialists—kept manuscripts for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The earliest securely dated surviving monumental evidence is a bronze bell inscribed in Yi and Chinese, dated 1485; earlier candidates are debated.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and schooling. It entered textbooks, newspapers, and public signs, carrying Yi writing beyond specialist manuscript traditions.

What does x in pyrx mean?

In Yi Pinyin, x marks tone, not a consonant. The spelling orders syllables by initial consonant, vowel, and tone: the final x in pyrx marks secondary-high tone, while an unmarked ending signals mid-level tone.

If ꁔ appears as a box, the active font lacks a glyph for this Yi character. The character is text rendered by a font, so its visible form depends on the font in use.

In Nuosu Yi text, ꁔ is ordinary writing; alone, it gives readers unfamiliar with the language too little context to identify a word.

An isolated ꁔ does not tell the reader which complete word is meant.

1

Why does ꁔ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
