Yi syllable pyr

86/1165

ꁕ records the Yi syllable pyr; on its own, it has no reliable word gloss. It belongs to the standardized Liangshan Yi syllabary used for the Nuosu variety, where each sign represents one syllable. pyr is also the Yi Pinyin spelling you enter in a compatible keyboard.

What ꁕ means

ꁕ records one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi writing system, used for the Nuosu variety. Its Yi Pinyin reading pyr is a spelling, not a translation; a word’s meaning comes from the surrounding Yi text.

In Yi Pinyin, p is the initial and yr the vowel; leaving off a tone mark represents the midlevel tone. That same spelling is the input recipe.

How did Yi writing become a syllabary?

One tradition says a person named Aki devised about 1,840 traditional Yi signs during the Tang dynasty, but the founder and origin date are not securely established. The earliest Yi script inscription generally treated as secure is on a bronze bell dated 1485. Earlier stone and bronze finds have been attributed to the Western Han and Shu Han periods, but those dates are debated. Traditional Yi glyphs were not direct borrowings of Chinese characters, though the writing tradition developed in a Chinese-influenced setting.

Older Yi scripts varied by region and were used for religious, magical, medical, genealogical, and historical texts passed down by bimo, ritual specialists trained in them. The Liangshan standard recast that tradition as a syllabary: each sign represents a syllable. A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Yi appeared in 1956; the standardized syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It is intended for Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.

ꁕ reads as one Liangshan Yi syllable; outside that text, the full word it belongs to is unclear.

Don’t assign a full word gloss to one syllable without its Yi context.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ꁕ show as a box?

A font coverage gap. The selected font may lack Yi syllabary characters; a font with Yi coverage lets ꁕ display.

Is ꁕ a Chinese character?

No. ꁕ is a Yi syllable sign, not a Han character used in Chinese writing. The standardized syllabary represents Liangshan Yi, not Mandarin.
