What ꁖ means
It writes the Nuosu syllable bbit.
A 2022 Nuosu Yi syllabary lists ꁖ as bi55, with glosses “go or come out,” “emerge,” and “sprout.” These are related dictionary senses, not a fixed English label; surrounding Nuosu words tell you which meaning fits.
Yi Pinyin is the Latin-letter spelling used for Nuosu syllables. Here, the final t marks a high, level tone—a steady high pitch.
Why is this syllable part of a modern Yi syllabary?
It standardizes one branch of a much older writing tradition.
Yi writing has been used in religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. Unicode's account gives a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 as an early surviving example; that dates a Yi writing artifact, not ꁖ itself.
To improve literacy, a standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It draws on older Yi characters, a tradition distinct from Han Chinese writing. The modern syllabary serves the Liangshan/Nuosu variety, not every Yi variety.
