What ꐂ means
It marks one Yi syllable; the surrounding word gives it meaning.
Its conventional Latin-letter spelling is qie, a label for the Yi syllable rather than an English translation. Tone is the pitch pattern of a spoken syllable: in this romanized naming system, qie has an unmarked mid-level tone, while final t, x, or p mark other tone categories. ꐂ alone therefore cannot be translated reliably without the Yi word or sentence around it.
When did Yi writing take shape?
Yi writing has a long history, but no single start date fits the evidence.
Some scholars discuss Yi-writing inscriptions on pottery, stone, and bronze more than a thousand years old. One standard account identifies a bronze bell dated 1485 as the earliest surviving example; paper Yi manuscripts appear around 1500. These dates describe the wider Yi tradition, not proof that ꐂ already had exactly this standardized form.
Bimo priests—Yi ritual specialists—copied religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts for local use, including funeral and ancestor-sacrifice material. Regional traditions differed in characters, readings, and writing direction. The Liangshan standard follows the Northern Yi tradition. Traditional Yi ideographs appear not to derive from Han Chinese characters, the characters used to write Chinese, despite Chinese influence in the region. The standard was devised in 1974 and officially issued in 1980; it supported official documents, newspapers, literature, and editions of older ritual texts.
Should I send ꐂ alone?
Only if the recipient reads Yi or you explain it.
For a Yi reader, ꐂ can be one syllable inside a meaningful word. Someone who does not read Yi receives an unexplained character, not a conventional chat reaction. If you want the message itself to land, include the full Yi phrase or an explanation.
If ꐂ appears as an empty box, the active font may lack Yi coverage; that does not change the character or its meaning. As of 2026, the Noto Sans Yi specimen lists support for the Yi Syllables block.
Neutral in Yi writing; opaque as a lone character in a chat whose readers do not read Yi.
Do not treat a lone ꐂ as a universal reaction.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꐂ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
