yi syllable qiep

Yi Syllable Qiep

1028/1165

ꐃ is a written Yi syllable. In Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) text, qiep is its Latin-letter label, while the word meaning comes from surrounding syllables. The writing tradition includes regional forms and a later Liangshan standard.

What ꐃ means

It writes one Yi syllable; the surrounding text supplies the word meaning.

In the standardized Liangshan form of Nuosu, qiep is the syllable's label in a Latin-letter romanization; final p marks a low-falling tone, a pitch that starts low and drops. The label identifies the syllable and tone, rather than translating into an English word.

How did the Yi script develop?

The writing tradition developed regionally; its origin remains debated.

A bronze bell dated 1485 is among the earliest dated Yi inscriptions commonly cited. A proposed Western Han-period example is disputed, and some ritual manuscripts may be older but are undated.

Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, kept manuscripts for ritual, medicine, spells, funerals, and divination. A Latin-letter scheme introduced in 1956 aimed to improve literacy; a standardized Liangshan script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for books and newspapers.

Which writing traditions are connected to Yi?

Liangshan Yi is one regional form of a wider Yi tradition.

The standardized Liangshan syllabary belongs to a wider Yi tradition; regional inventories, shapes, sounds, and reading conventions vary. Cuan wen, a historical writing tradition, has been proposed as an antecedent, but that lineage is unsettled.

The Yi script is structurally independent of Chinese writing and is not a variant of neighboring Tibetan, Burmese, or Tai scripts. Visual resemblance alone does not establish a shared origin.

Inside Yi writing, it functions as a syllable; elsewhere, it reads as a script sample.

Alone, it gives no reliable cue about the sender's mood.

Treat it as a script sample or fragment; it does not specify a sender's mood on its own.
