yi syllable qip

Yi syllable qip

ꏿ is one syllable in the Liangshan/Nuosu Yi script, so on its own it is a fragment rather than a full message. In the romanized form qip, final p marks a low, falling tone; the word's meaning depends on the surrounding Yi text.

What ꏿ means

It is one Yi syllable, not a complete message.

In Liangshan romanization, qip is the written label for this syllable; its final p marks a low, falling tone. A syllable can represent different words, so the surrounding Yi text tells you which word it represents.

Where did the Yi script come from?

Older dates are disputed; Yi writing grew through regional traditions.

Some accounts attribute stone, bronze, pottery, and bone inscriptions to the Western Han and early third century, but those dates are disputed. A bronze bell from 1485 is cited as the earliest surviving monumental example; paper and parchment manuscripts appear around 1500.

Older Yi writing varied by region; village priests used it for religious, ritual, medical, and genealogical texts. Standardized Liangshan writing was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. A 2013 ethnographic account describes its use in Liangshan schools, publishing, public notices, media, and online communication. It notes that the standard is not universal across Yi communities and records one young Nuosu speaker's objection that it felt inauthentic. The standard is rooted in Yi traditions, not borrowed from Han Chinese, Tibetan, Burmese, or Tai scripts.

How to type ꏿ?

Hex entry works in some apps; a Yi keyboard is another route.

As of 2026-09-12, Microsoft Office accepts A3FF followed by Alt+X; Linux GTK accepts Ctrl+Shift+U, A3FF, then Enter. These shortcuts are app-specific. A Yi/Nuosu keyboard supports syllable-based entry.

If ꏿ appears as a square, the app's font lacks Yi coverage; it is still the same text character. Different fonts may draw it differently.

This is a Liangshan/Nuosu Yi syllable, used in Yi writing and script study.

Alone, it does not identify the word; surrounding Yi text supplies that context.

Someone sent me ꏿ—what does it mean?

It is a Yi syllable, but alone it does not tell you which word was intended. The surrounding Yi text is needed.

Why does ꏿ show as a box?

A missing Yi font is the usual cause. The app cannot draw this text character, so it shows a placeholder square.
