What ꌺ means
It represents a spoken Yi syllable spelled “sse” with Latin letters. Yi Pinyin is the Latin-letter system used to write Yi syllables; the complete Yi word or sentence supplies the meaning.
Yi writing has long, regionally varied traditions. The earliest securely dated surviving Yi example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485; surviving paper texts date to around 1500. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used traditional Yi writing for religious and ritual works, medicine, family histories, and historical texts.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 from Northern Yi forms. It assigns one spoken syllable to each character. Traditional Yi writing, historically labeled Cuan or Wei, used signs associated with words or ideas; the Liangshan syllabary is a later, distinct part of that broader Yi writing history.
