yi syllable ssep

Yi syllable Ssep

ꌻ is a syllable sign in standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) writing, not an emoji. “Ssep” is its romanized reading; in a message it belongs to Yi text and may be opaque to readers unfamiliar with the script.

What ꌻ means

The earliest surviving Yi inscription cited is on a bronze bell dated 1485. Village priests used traditional forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.

Regional forms varied. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 from traditional forms for one dialect. ꌻ belongs to that standard, not every Yi writing tradition.

Language-specific written text, not a universal reaction.

Alone, it may be opaque to readers who do not read Yi.
