What ꎀ means
It marks a syllable; “rrot” is not a word translation.
In the Liangshan standard used for Nuosu, “rrot” is the Latin-letter spelling for its sound. Read ꎀ as part of the surrounding Yi text, where syllables combine into words.
What was Yi writing used for?
It recorded ritual, medical, and historical knowledge.
Many traditional Yi texts were passed down by bimo, ritual specialists; they include scripture, legends, histories, medicine, and astrology. The earliest securely dated evidence is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; claimed earlier inscriptions and undated manuscripts leave the deeper origin uncertain.
Later standardization brought Yi writing into literacy textbooks, practical manuals, adult classes, literature, and newspapers.
How did Yi writing change?
Older Yi writing varied; the Liangshan standard uses a phonetic syllabary.
Earlier Yi forms differed by region and often used signs for words or ideas; a word could also have alternate written forms.
The Liangshan standard was developed in the 1970s and officially established in 1980. It gives each syllable its own sign. It is historically connected to Yi forms in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou, but the systems are not interchangeable: glyph shapes, sound values, punctuation, and readability differ.
Neutral in Yi writing; opaque outside Yi-language context.
