What ꎴ means
It is the Nuosu syllable sho, glossed “to harvest.”
In Liangshan romanization (a Latin-letter spelling), unmarked sho has a steady middle tone.
How did Liangshan Yi writing develop?
It grew from regional Yi traditions into a literacy standard.
Older Cuan and Wei forms served religious, medical, magical and family-line writing. The Aki origin story is traditional; a bronze bell inscription from 1485 is the earliest securely dated example.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 for literacy and local pronunciation, then promulgated in 1980. It adapts older Yi writing for Nuosu, not every Yi variety.
