What ꏅ means
ꏅ is a Yi syllable; standardized Nuosu romanization writes it as shyr.
One Nuosu word list glosses the romanized spelling shyr as “yell.” That does not make ꏅ a standalone word: surrounding Yi syllables determine the word and sentence.
How old is the Yi script behind ꏅ?
The wider Yi script has dated monuments from the fifteenth century.
Some undated manuscripts may be older; this evidence dates the broader script tradition, not ꏅ’s exact form.
Traditional Yi writing included religious, magical, and medical texts used by bimo, Yi ritual specialists; passages were also read or recited at funerals, weddings, healing, and purification rites. Local forms varied. The modern Liangshan standard was assembled in the 1970s from older Northern Yi forms and formally promulgated in 1980. ꏅ belongs to that standardized branch of a wider Yi tradition.
A syllable for Yi writing; on its own, it reads as a script sample.
