yi syllable shyrx

Yi syllable shyrx

965/1165

ꏄ writes one Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) syllable, romanized as shyrx; by itself, it is not a whole word with a reliable translation. In Yi text, its sound contributes to a word whose context supplies the meaning. The character belongs to a modern regional standard shaped from older Yi forms.

Text symbol

What ꏄ means

It writes one Nuosu syllable, romanized as shyrx.

In the standard Liangshan romanization, shyrx is a pronunciation spelling: the final x marks the secondary-high tone, and the r within it marks a creaky vowel. These marks guide pronunciation; they are not a translation.

By itself, ꏄ identifies a sound unit, not a complete message. Its word-level meaning comes from the surrounding Yi text.

How did Yi writing develop?

Yi writing grew through regional traditions, not one founding alphabet.

As of 2026, its origin remains disputed: earlier inscriptions on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone have been claimed, while the oldest securely dated example commonly cited is the Chenghua Bell inscription from 1485.

Bimo priests—hereditary ritual specialists—copied texts on paper, cloth, bamboo, wood, bone, horn, and rock. The writings covered religion and ritual, medicine, genealogy, legends, and astrology. To improve literacy, a modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, bringing Yi writing into textbooks, official documents, and publishing.

Is ꏄ the same in every Yi script?

No; it belongs to the modern Liangshan standard.

Classical and regional Yi writing differs in inventories, shapes, orientations, and readings; the same syllable can have variant graphs. The modern standard selected forms from older Northern Yi writing, so ꏄ is historically linked to that tradition but does not make every older manuscript readable.

A Nuosu reader can recognize it as a syllable; without Yi literacy, its reading may be opaque.
