What ꄢ means
“Tax” is the Latin-letter label, not an English translation. In Liangshan spelling, final x marks a secondary-high tone.
The earliest surviving dated Yi example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485. Bimo, traditional Yi religious specialists, copied regional forms into religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. Earlier origins remain uncertain. Devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, the Liangshan standard made one regional form the basis for literacy and everyday writing. Other Yi traditions share this history; resemblance alone does not prove descent from Han characters.
