What ꃩ means

It writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi script.

A syllable is a spoken unit within a word. Here, ꃩ contributes one Nuosu syllable; the surrounding word and sentence tell you how to translate it.

How did Liangshan Yi writing develop?

The Liangshan standard grew from older regional Yi writing traditions. Traditional Yi writing was preserved through local lineages; bimo—ritual specialists—copied manuscripts for religious, magical, and medical use. Some accounts identify earlier Yi inscriptions on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone; surviving paper texts are described as dating to the late Ming dynasty.

The standardized Liangshan script took shape in the 1970s and was officially promulgated in 1980. It generally assigns one written sign to each distinct syllable. Other Yi writing traditions are related but not fully mutually intelligible; a shared syllable may differ in shape, pronunciation, or meaning across traditions. Yi radicals, the signs used to index syllables, form a separate set; Chinese punctuation is another borrowed layer.

How do I type ꃩ?

A Yi input method uses phonetic entry and character candidates. On Windows, the Yi IME accepts syllable sounds from a regular keyboard and offers Yi-character candidates; choose the one for this syllable.

If ꃩ appears as a blank box, the active font lacks this glyph. Use a font with coverage for standardized Yi syllables.

In Yi text, it is a sound-bearing syllable; readers who do not know Yi need the surrounding words to interpret it.

Why is ꃩ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
