What ꃧ means
It represents a syllable; surrounding words supply its meaning.
“Viex” is the romanized label for how this Liangshan Yi syllable is read, not its translation. In this standard, final x marks the secondary-high tone. Other Yi writing traditions may use different forms or readings.
Yi writing predates its literacy standard
The earliest securely dated example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Yi writing developed across regional traditions, and its older beginnings remain debated. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used traditional texts for ritual, medicine, genealogy, and literature.
The standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy.
