What ꃸ means

It is a written sound unit in the Liangshan Yi script.

The standard Liangshan spelling written with Latin letters is vurx. Enter that spelling in a Yi phonetic input method and choose ꃸ from the candidate list.

How did Yi writing reach a Liangshan standard?

Traditional Yi writing varied by region; much classical literature used signs representing words or ideas, with many local forms. Bimo, Yi religious specialists, passed manuscripts among themselves on scripture, legend, history, medicine, and astrology. The Chenghua Bell Inscriptions, among the oldest surviving examples with reliable dates, were cast on a bell in the 15th century.

A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan speech was introduced in 1956 to improve literacy. The standard Liangshan script, a syllabary with one sign per syllable, grew from older Yi writing; it was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It supported schooling, textbooks, literature, and newspapers. This standard represents Liangshan Yi, while Yunnan and Guizhou have distinct traditional Yi systems.

Why does ꃸ show as a box?

The available fonts cannot draw this Yi syllable.

ꃸ is a text character, so its shape comes from the font used by the app. Select a font that includes the standardized Yi syllabary; fonts can draw the same character differently without changing which character it is.

In Liangshan Yi text, it functions as a regular syllable; its tone is linguistic, not a separate message cue.

Use the surrounding Yi word or sentence to interpret it; vurx is a spelling, not an English gloss.

Why does ꃸ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
