yi syllable vur

Yi Syllable Vur

250/1165

ꃹ writes the Liangshan Yi syllable vur. Alone, it identifies the syllable but does not translate a whole message; Yi context supplies its meaning. Its tone is level and mid-pitch.

Text symbol

What ꃹ means

It writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi.

vur is its Latin spelling, not a translation. Its unmarked ending signals a level, middle-pitch tone; the Yi word or sentence supplies meaning.

Older Yi writing (Cuan or Wei) varied locally. Bimo, village priests, used it for religious, magical, medical and family-history texts. A 1485 bronze-bell inscription is the oldest surviving example. The Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy, adapting older forms for that dialect alone.

Why does ꃹ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
