What ꃺ means
A Nuosu word list glosses ꃺ as “numb.” vyt is its Liangshan romanization, and final t marks high tone. Nuosu Yi uses syllabic characters: ꃺ writes one syllable, whose word meaning depends on context.
A Yi inscription on a bronze bell is dated 1485. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, copied traditional manuscripts for rites, magic, healing, and family histories. The modern Liangshan standard grew from traditional writing: it was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It reduced regional spelling variation for Nuosu, but is not a universal spelling system for every Yi language.
What does ꃺ mean when sent alone?
By itself, it is usually a script sample, not a reply.
Inside Yi text, surrounding syllables help identify the intended word. In a chat with no Nuosu context, that word is unclear; ask what phrase it came from before translating it.
At home in Nuosu text or script discussion; fonts draw its form, not vendor emoji artwork.
Is ꃺ an emoji? No; it is a Nuosu Yi character, not a ready-made reaction.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꃺ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
