What ꃾ means

ꃾ writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. Its Yi Pinyin form is vyrx; the final x marks secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern in spoken Yi. This Latin-letter spelling labels the syllable rather than translating it.

Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, had many local forms with different glyph shapes and writing directions. Village ritual specialists called bimo preserved religious, medical, and family-lineage texts. One origin tradition credits Aki with devising the script; this is a traditional account, not a documented invention.

A Yi inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485 is the earliest surviving example with a secure date. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It adapted older Yi writing as a syllabary—one sign per syllable—but covers Liangshan Yi, not every Yi language.

How do I type ꃾ?

Use a Yi input method or Unicode hexadecimal entry. A Yi input method editor (IME) turns a typed syllable spelling into character candidates; select ꃾ when it appears. Hexadecimal entry is another route when your app supports it.

Neutral written-language character; its message comes from the Yi words around it.

Alone, it identifies a syllable but may not reveal what the sender meant.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ꃾ look different in another font?

It may: fonts draw the same encoded character differently, and a font without Yi coverage may show a blank box. As of 2026-10-08, Nuosu SIL includes the standardized Yi syllables.

Is ꃾ a Chinese character?

No. ꃾ is a syllable sign in the standardized Liangshan Yi system, a separate writing system from Chinese Han characters.
