What ꃻ means
ꃻ represents one Liangshan Yi syllable, not a complete message. “vyx” is its Liangshan romanized spelling; the final x marks the secondary-high tone. That spelling names the syllable’s form, not an English word: a surrounding Yi word or phrase supplies the lexical meaning.
Some accounts point to inscriptions from the Western Han, but that early dating is disputed. A surviving Yi bronze bell dated 1485 and paper or sheepskin manuscripts from around 1500 show a later documented record. Before modern standardization, local Yi writing traditions served ritual, medical, and genealogical work. A Latin-based spelling scheme appeared in 1956; a traditional-script standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, supporting a shared Liangshan form for literacy, books, newspapers, and other public writing.
Yi writing also has separate radical signs used to index syllables. Their names reflect the Yi syllables whose shapes the signs were abstracted from.
what does ꃻ mean when someone sends it?
Read it as one Yi syllable; the surrounding text supplies the word. If someone sends ꃻ alone, treat it as a piece of Yi writing unless the conversation gives another clue. It does not translate into a complete message by itself; ask which word or phrase they intended.
Readers familiar with other Yi writing traditions may recognize the script family. The standardized Liangshan form belongs to that tradition and does not automatically substitute for a local form.

Questions people ask
2is ꃻ an emoji?
No. It is a text syllable from the Yi script.
why does ꃻ show as a box?
It can when the active font lacks Yi glyphs. Use a font that supports the Yi script; the box is a missing-glyph placeholder, not a different character.
