What ꃽ means
ꃽ represents a spoken syllable; context supplies its meaning. “Vyp” is the Latin-letter label for that syllable and tone, not an English translation. Final p marks a low-falling tone: the voice drops in pitch.
Among the Nuosu, a Yi people of Liangshan, tradition credits Aki with creating the script during the Tang era (618–907 CE); the oldest surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485. In traditional Yi communities, village priests kept local scripts for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.
The modern standardized Yi script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for the Liangshan dialect. It grew from Classical Yi ideographs, an older form of Yi writing, and is designed for that dialect, not every Yi language. Its outline can vary by font.
