yi syllable byr

Yi Syllable Byr

56/1165

ꀷ is a syllabic character in standardized Liangshan Yi writing; it contributes a syllable, not a standalone English word. BYR is the romanized label for that syllable, not a translation. The current standard grew from older Yi writing with regional forms.

What ꀷ means

One Liangshan Yi syllable; its word-level meaning depends on context.

BYR is the standard Liangshan romanization label for this Yi syllable, not a translation. In a Yi word or sentence, ꀷ contributes one spoken syllable; the surrounding syllables and context determine the word's meaning. The Liangshan script is a syllabary: its signs represent spoken syllables.

How did the Liangshan Yi writing system develop?

Today's Liangshan standard adapted older Yi forms to write one dialect.

The oldest reliably dated surviving Yi examples are monumental inscriptions, including the Chenghua Bell inscription from the 15th century. Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, varied by region rather than forming one uniform system. Yi religious specialists called bi-mox used these forms for ritual, magical, medical, family-history, historical, and literary texts.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially announced in 1980 to support literacy in one dialect. It drew on traditional writing but does not represent every Yi variety. Yi languages belong to the Lolo-Burmese branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family; this linguistic connection does not make the Yi script a form of Tibetan or Burmese writing.

Someone sent me ꀷ—what should I read into it?

Ask what Yi word or sentence it belongs to before assigning it a message.

Within Yi text, ꀷ is one syllable in a word or phrase. Sent alone to someone who does not read Yi, it provides no reliable English message; ask the sender for the surrounding words or intended meaning.

Neutral in Yi-language writing; opaque as a standalone message to someone who does not read Yi.
