What ꑸ means
It is one Yi-language syllable, not a full word by itself. Liangshan is a region in southwest China, and Nuosu is the name used for its Yi language. Standard romanization writes this syllable as yiep; final p marks low-falling pitch, not a spoken consonant. In ꑸꑽꊪ (“plant potatoes”), the object comes before the verb.
Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, has many local forms. A widespread origin story credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty (618–907), though the script’s beginnings remain debated. Some claimed inscriptions on pottery, stone, bronze, or bone are disputed; clearer surviving evidence includes a bronze bell from Guizhou dated 1485. The earliest surviving Yi texts on paper or sheepskin date to around 1500.
Village priests called bimo copied traditional Yi texts for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical use, and local writing traditions diverged. Some traditions are related but not fully mutually intelligible. A Latin-alphabet system for Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956. The modern syllabary grew from older Yi signs, each character representing a spoken syllable. Its standardized form was devised to improve literacy in 1974, officially promulgated in 1980, and adopted as China’s national Yi standard in 1991. It writes Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu, not every Yi variety.
How do I type ꑸ?
Use Unicode hexadecimal input or a Yi-aware keyboard.
yiep is the standardized Latin spelling, not an insertion shortcut by itself. A Yi-aware keyboard can map the syllable spelling to its Yi character.
On Ubuntu, press Ctrl+Shift+U, enter A478, then press Enter or Space. In Microsoft Word, type A478 and press Alt+X. If ꑸ appears as a box, the selected font lacks a Yi glyph; fonts may draw the same encoded Yi syllable with different shapes.
This is Liangshan Yi language text; the surrounding word supplies its reading.
Do not read a lone ꑸ as a fixed message without Yi-language context.
