yi syllable yyp

Yi Syllable Yyp

1163/1165

ꒊ is a Nuosu syllable sign in standardized Liangshan Yi writing; alone, it has no fixed English translation. In the Nuosu word ꒊꃀ, transcribed yyp mop, it contributes “water,” while the whole word means “river.” The standardized phonetic syllabary was made for the Liangshan dialect from older, regionally varied Yi writing traditions.

What ꒊ means

It is a Nuosu syllable; the word around it supplies its meaning.

In the Latin-letter transcription used for Nuosu, this syllable is written yyp; its final p marks a low-falling tone, a pitch pattern Nuosu uses to distinguish syllables. The word ꒊꃀ is transcribed yyp mop and means “river”; ꒊ is glossed “water,” so the isolated character has no complete English translation.

Yi writing is older than digital encoding: the earliest reliably dated examples in this tradition are the 15th-century Chenghua Bell Inscriptions. Older finds on bronze, stone, pottery and bone have been reported, but they do not settle the script’s origin; the Aki account is a traditional origin story, not established single-inventor history. Classical Yi writing varied by region and was preserved by bimo—religious specialists who kept texts on scripture, ritual, medicine, astrology and family genealogies. The phonetic Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to widen literacy. Readers trained in other Yi writing traditions may not recognize its syllables as their own local forms.

Why does ꒊ show as a box?

A font without Yi coverage cannot draw it.

ꒊ is a font-drawn text character. If the selected font lacks Yi coverage, it may appear as a missing-glyph box or another fallback mark. A font with Yi coverage, such as Nuosu SIL, can display it; the box is a font issue.

A Nuosu Yi keyboard layout, such as SIL’s, can enter the syllable directly; an ordinary Latin keyboard types yyp as letters. On an input method that supports Unicode hexadecimal entry, switch to that mode and enter A48A (the code point is UA48A); activation keys vary by operating system.

Questions people ask

Why does ꒊ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
