What ꍚ means
It represents one Yi syllable in the Liangshan standard. The Yi script is used to write Nuosu in Liangshan. In the standard's Latin spelling, this syllable is zhur; read it with the surrounding Yi text.
How did Yi writing develop?
Yi writing grew from varied local traditions into a standardized script. Traditional origin accounts name figures such as A Ke or Aki. A surviving inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485 shows the script was in use by then.
Older local scripts were used by village ritual specialists—people responsible for local rites—to preserve religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. Their forms, repertoires, and writing directions varied by place.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to broaden literacy. A 2024 study found digital Nuosu writing used mainly for literary and artistic expression and for learning the script.
Someone sent me ꍚ—what should I read?
Treat it as a Yi text sample until you have context. Read it with the surrounding Yi words before settling on a translation. Sent alone, it may be a script demonstration, input practice, or a font check.
