What ꍛ means
Read it as one syllable within a Yi word or sentence.
In standardized Liangshan Yi, zhyt is the romanized label for this syllable. zh marks the opening consonant, y the vowel, and final t marks a high, level tone—not a t sound after the vowel.
A commonly cited surviving example of Yi writing is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485. Many manuscripts are undated and may be older. In traditional Yi communities, bimo (ritual specialists) chiefly preserved religious, magical, and medical texts.
How did the Yi script become standardized?
The Liangshan standard brought an older regional form into public use.
Yi writing had several regional traditions; someone who could read one might not be able to read another. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974, officially promulgated in 1980, and based on older Northern Yi graphs. Its standardized form appeared in official documents, newspapers, and literature; ritual and epic works could also be printed in it.
Some histories use “Cuan script” for possible earlier writing in Yunnan. That proposed connection gives historical context, but does not establish that ꍛ descends directly from a particular older sign.

zhyx shares the opening consonant and vowel; final x marks secondary-high tone, unlike the high, level tone marked by t in zhyt.
zhy has mid-level tone; unlike zhyt, it has no final tone letter.
zhyp marks low-falling tone with final p, not the high, level tone of zhyt.Questions people ask
1Why does ꍛ display as a box or a different-looking glyph?
It can. The active font determines how the character is drawn; an app without Yi coverage may show a missing-glyph box or fall back to another font. The text character remains ꍛ.
